About Me

Hi, I’m Julie Jarzemsky, a Software Engineer specializing in User Interface web development. I came into the field of software engineering by following my interest in creative thinking and problem solving. I have always had a knack for solving puzzles, garnering my interest in math early on, but it took some time to find a career that incorporated these skills in a way that ignited my interest. For me, the key to ramping up in the field was being open to trying something completely new to me, feeling clueless at first but having faith in myself and the dedication to become confident in my skills. While I learned foundational programming skills through formal education, there are many routes to entering the field. Through my network and involvement in the programming community in Austin, Texas, I have learned about the myriad of ways people learn programming skills and score a job in the industry. Whether you have a background in math or have just always loved to solve puzzles, software engineering is a career worth considering. It is a fulfilling career with plentiful job opportunities. I started at HomeAway as an intern, moving on to a full time position after completing my degree in computer science. While at HomeAway, I have made the transition towards becoming a full-stack engineer. To accomplish this, I learned UI programming, which wasn’t taught at my university. These skills allowed me to work on projects I am passionate about, creating better user experiences through improved designs to HomeAway’s website. I can share the steps I took to learn these skills on the job. Since I learned how to code, I have made a point to attract more women and girls to the industry. I have volunteered at after-school programs and camps to teach middle schoolers basic programming concepts. I also participate in organizations that promote women in tech, like ChickTech and Women Who Code. Whether you are interested in learning about what it’s like working in tech or want tips for acing a technical interview, I can share my experiences and show you the way to explore the ever-changing tech industry.

Reviews

"Last week, I had the pleasure of meeting with Julie for my first session in getting started with coding/software engineering, and it was awesome!! She is extremely knowledgable and very easy to talk to. I was instantly comfortable sharing my questions and concerns (and believe me, I had a TON) but Julie was patient and had incredibly insightful answers to each one. Not only was she great during the session, but she followed up with an email that included information and resources that would help me be successful in changing my career path to one of software development. Meeting with Julie gave me the perfect head start, and I would recommend it to anyone that wants to break in to this field."
