Well, it's time to write your resignation letter and prepare for your last day of work.
Whether you're leaving your current job due to dissatisfaction or to improve your financial well-being, the time has come.
Whatever the case, any responsible employee (or soon-to-be ex-employee!) should pen a polite resignation letter. This should be a professional email that communicates a few details about your transition out of an organization—all while leaving on a positive note. So, how do you get started?
If you have no idea how to start this letter, you're not alone. In fact, Insider's Hendrikje Rudnick used ChatGPT to generate a would-be resignation letter and learned a few things.
If you're struggling with what to write in your resignation, what to include, what not to include in your resignation letter, we have you covered. OpenAI's ChatGPT is a great tool for creating templates, rough outlines, and generating ideas to write basically anything!
In this article, we're exploring how to use artificial intelligence to write your resignation letter and start your smooth transition to whatever comes next!

How to Write Your Resignation Letter Using ChatGPT

Sometimes, getting started with writing professional emails is the toughest part. Artificial intelligence chatbots like ChatGPT can help you by generating a great starting point.
All you have to do is create a prompt to get things started.

Using ChatGPT Prompts to Generate Your Resignation Letter

If you've never used ChatGPT before, here's a quick tutorial!
  • ChatGPT Prompts: Prompts guide ChatGPT in the form of suggestions, directions, or questions you input. ChatGPT generates an output tailored to your specific input. The more clearly you can explain what you want, the more clear an answer you'll receive from ChatGPT.
When using AI to help create a piece of writing, we have a few "rules" to follow to get the best results.
  • Be specific.
  • Always create customized prompts
  • Try multiple prompts to get a variety of answers
  • Don't rely on AI to write your entire letter
Let's get started writing your resignation letter.

Resignation Letter Templates from ChatGPT

If AI freaks you out or, for whatever reason, you don't have an OpenAI account, we've got you covered. We created a few resignation letter templates using ChatGPT. Feel free to use these resignation letter templates as a starting point for your own resignation letter.

Resignation Letter for Personal Reasons Template

When writing a resignation letter for personal reasons, you don't need to give too many details. Everything you choose to include in your resignation letter should only serve to make your transition smooth.
This could include providing your dates (with at least a two-week notice), offering to train a replacement, and any small details that may need to be addressed before moving on to your next role.
You don't need to tell your soon-to-be ex-employer any more details than necessary—unless you choose to do so.
For this template, we used the prompt, "Create a resignation letter giving two weeks' notice that communicates leaving for undisclosed personal reasons."
Dear [Recipient's Name],

I hope this letter finds you well. It is with mixed emotions that I write to tender my resignation from my position as [Your Position] at [Company Name]. My last day of employment will be [Date], providing you with the standard two weeks' notice.

Please understand that my decision to resign is due to undisclosed personal reasons. Although it is difficult for me not to provide specific details, I kindly request your understanding and respect for my need to keep this information private at this time. It has been a challenging decision for me to make, but I firmly believe it is in the best interest of both myself and the company.

I want to express my sincere gratitude for the opportunities and experiences I have gained during my tenure at [Company Name]. Working alongside such a talented and supportive team has been truly rewarding. I have learned and grown both personally and professionally, and I am grateful for the valuable skills and knowledge I have acquired.

During the remaining two weeks, I will do my utmost to ensure a smooth transition. I am committed to completing any pending projects and will assist in the transfer of my responsibilities to a suitable replacement. If there is anything specific you would like me to focus on or any tasks you would like me to prioritize during this period, please let me know, and I will be happy to accommodate.

I genuinely appreciate your understanding regarding my decision to keep the reasons for my departure private. I would also like to express my appreciation to the entire team for their support and collaboration throughout my time here. It has been a pleasure to work with such talented individuals, and I will cherish the relationships I have formed.

Please let me know how I can be of assistance during this transition period. I am more than willing to participate in the hiring and training process for my replacement or any other tasks that may be required.

I wish [Company Name] continued success in all its future endeavors. I have no doubt that the company will thrive and achieve great things. Thank you once again for the opportunities and support provided to me during my tenure here.

Resignation Letter for a Job You Hate

So, you hate your job, and it's time to move on! Even if you hate your boss and your colleagues, the responsible approach and the professional approach is to keep things positive in your resignation letter.
For this template, we used the prompt "Create a very* brief but polite resignation letter template giving two weeks' notice for a job I really hated."
*Before generating this prompt, we used a similar one. ChatGPT generated a very lengthy resignation letter, which would likely be unnecessary for someone looking to leave a job they hated. For the below template, we added the word "very", which cut the length in half! This is a great example of how specificity can really change what ChatGPT generates.
Dear [Recipient's Name],

I am writing to inform you that I am resigning from my position as [Your Position] at [Company Name]. My last day of employment will be [Date], providing the standard two weeks' notice.

I appreciate the opportunities I have had during my time at [Company Name]. However, I have come to the difficult decision that this role is not the right fit for me. I believe it is in the best interest of both myself and the company to pursue other opportunities.

I will ensure a smooth transition by completing any necessary tasks and assisting in the transfer of my responsibilities. If there are any specific tasks or projects you would like me to prioritize during this period, please let me know.

I would like to express my gratitude for the support and collaboration I have received from the team at [Company Name]. While this role may not have been a positive experience for me, I value the skills and knowledge I have gained.

Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
