The people who work at RealSelf are truly what makes our culture so unique. We are a hard-working group that doesn't forget that acting out of kindness and caring for one another holds high value in a business. While we continue to grow in size, we remain true to who we are by not throwing out the special pieces that have helped shape us over the years. We have a variety of backgrounds working here, but we all unite behind one common goal: to help our consumers feel confident with their decisions.

What kinds of employee development/training does RealSelf offer?

We empower our employees to own their career development and seize the various opportunities provided to them. We offer each employee $1,000 annually through our Professional Development Granting Program. We also offer a two-day management training course for all managers at RealSelf and monthly training sessions that are open to all staff and focus on developing the whole person—we’ve had nutritionists, self-defense instructors, and improv troupes come in and work with our team.

What are the hours like at RealSelf?

Somewhat flexible. We allow employees to work with their managers and teams to figure out the best schedules for them.

Does RealSelf have programs for team bonding? How close IS the team? Are there team lunches? Happy hours? Holiday parties?

Yes! We thoroughly enjoy our teammates, and it shows. We gather monthly as a company for our All Hands meetings, which include a catered lunch. Each team typically does a quarterly group activity, either for various holidays or just because. The RealSelf annual holiday party is always one to remember and happens in early December. Family and friends are welcome and somehow, each year we manage to top the incredible year before it. Some of our best events, though, are staff-led like Beer Friday, trivia night, and our participation in this year’s Women’s March.

Why do women love working at RealSelf?

This is a company for women by women. We work every day to support women holistically and to create an empowering workplace for them in general. RealSelf offers programs like self-defense classes and mindfulness workshops on a regular basis to all of its employees. But, the thing we hear most from our female employees and candidates is that our work giving back around the world and in our community is the most meaningful investment for them.

How does RealSelf make sure sexual harassment and gender discrimination are not tolerated? Are there any policies in place?

There is a zero-tolerance policy for sexual harassment and gender discrimination of any kind at RealSelf. Employees are strongly encouraged to report concerns about unwelcome behavior before the situation becomes severe. We want to stop behaviors long before they rise to the level of sexual harassment or discrimination. Harassment or discrimination complaints are promptly and thoroughly investigated and kept confidential except for disclosure reasonably required by the investigation. After the investigation has been completed, we take prompt and effective corrective action against anyone found to have violated this policy.

Purpose is inherent in what we do, it’s not just something we say. For example, when building out our expansion space, we solicited feedback from the company and based on that, decided to build individual, gender-neutral restrooms to create a truly welcoming and safe space for all employees, and particularly our transgender community. What sort of room is there for growth and advancement at RealSelf?

RealSelf will grow significantly over the next few years. That means that inherently, there's an incredible amount of opportunity for employee growth. We are deeply invested in achieving our goals by developing our existing team. We offer shadow and mentorship programs that allow employees to interact with (and learn more about) other roles within the organization. We have a solid performance review and development system in place that ensures employees and managers are constantly aligned on a quarterly and annual basis, as well.

What type of support does RealSelf offer new mothers and families?

RealSelf provides twelve weeks of paid maternity leave for new mothers, six weeks of paid leave for new parents who did not give birth, and six weeks of paid leave for parents of a newly adopted or recently placed foster child. All regular full-time employees who have been employed at least six months are eligible to take paid parental leave. We know each situation is unique, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as we can to our new parents.

Yes, we have a great work life balance at RealSelf and our employees have an incredibly wide range of personal interests—from world traveling to quilting to mountaineering—and value their time spent outside of work. As a company, we are better when our people live full lives. What qualities does RealSelf look for in a candidate? How can a candidate stand out?

We look for candidates who align well with our company values: customer centered, real-time, one team. Beyond the experience you have, are you eager to learn? Do you have a strong level of humility? Do you show empathy? Are you excited about solving unheard of problems? These are qualities we’re looking for, outside of what your resume tells us.

To stand out, we ask candidates to explain in 150 characters or less what makes them unique - get creative! Do you speak four languages? Did you start your own company only to have it fail? All of these are examples of great answers we’ve seen to that question.

How often does RealSelf hire new people?

Almost weekly. With roughly twenty open roles at a time, we are always eager to bring on new talent!

What are RealSelf's views on hiring women who are returning to the workforce after an extended break? What can they do to stand out in the application process?

We are always excited to talk with talented candidates who have the right experience for a job. If that same candidate had a gap in employment, all we ask is that you can speak to the reason behind it. To stand out in the application process, we'd again suggest addressing the “What makes you unique?” question.

How often does RealSelf promote from within?

Promotions happen in real time. If you’re contributing at a higher level and your team has a need for that role, we don’t delay. In 2017, over 20% of our workforce was promoted.

What’s the interview process like?

The first step is a high-level call with one of our recruiters. From there, you’ll speak with a hiring manager and then move on to an onsite interview. For some roles, there are take-home tests or presentations, but on average, we can usually finish the entire interview process (application and offer) within six weeks.

Does RealSelf offer relocation assistance for new employees?

This depends on the position. For roles that we get a great local response for, we typically do not offer relocation. If we’re working on a position that’s harder to hire for within the Seattle market, we will expand our search and work with the Finance department to offer relocation.

Where do you recruit candidates?

Everywhere! We recruit candidates straight out of university programs from across the US, find candidates on Glassdoor, LinkedIn, and Indeed, or from industry-specific organizations and meetups. We recruit a diverse group of candidates, but the common thread is a collaborative spirit and strategic, customer-centered focus plus an open-minded, rapidly-iterative approach to building great products.

What’s the best way for someone to prepare for an interview at RealSelf?

Get to know our product and our consumer, engage with our website and app, then show up with thoughts on your experience and empathy for the customers on both sides of our marketplace. Also, research the individuals that you are interviewing with and try to understand their individual career paths and how they came to RealSelf.

Does RealSelf have an internship program? If so, do you regularly hire your interns?

Yes, we have a growing internship program within our Engineering, UX, and Product teams and are looking to expand to the whole company as we grow. We have extended offers to interns in the past and are always looking to mentor and grow candidates from interns into full-time employees.

What’s one question a candidate should expect to get asked in one of RealSelf's interviews?

"Had you heard about RealSelf prior to applying?" It’s OK if a candidate hasn’t, we are just curious to learn who knew about us before considering our company for employment. It also helps us tailor the general company info pitch we give. Of course, bonus points if you didn't know about RealSelf beforehand but have since spent time researching our site.

What’s the interview dress code?

Whatever you are comfortable wearing to a business casual office setting.
