WOMEN-OWNED BUSINESSES HAVE GROWN BY 67% IN THE LAST EIGHT YEARS—AND WITH GOOD REASON. HERE'S WHY YOU TOO MIGHT CHOOSE TO BE YOUR OWN BOSS.

Since 1997, the number of female-owned businesses has increased dramatically by a staggering 67%, with around 30% of all US businesses owned by women. Forbes has christened this “The New Women’s Movement;" in direct contrast to the Quiet Revolution of 1970, where women were leaving their homes to enter the workforce. Women of the new revolution are now leaving the workforce to return home and run their own businesses. {Click to Tweet}

Entrepreneurship has been embraced whole-heartedly by women around the globe. Furthermore, it has been innovated and improved upon by women. Females are thriving as entrepreneurs because they are able to take the reins and do things their way; breaking the boundaries of business as we once knew it.

Whether you are on the brink of entrepreneurship or have been toying with the idea of starting your own business, it’s important to consider the advantages that women can garner from embarking on their own entrepreneurial venture.

IMPROVE WORK/LIFE BALANCE

By setting up shop at home, you are able to create a company culture that is conducive to the lifestyle you lead. {Click to Tweet} This is perhaps the most important advantage to starting your own business.

When it comes to starting and supporting a family, corporate environments tend not to offer the level of flexibility that women prefer. Choosing your own hours and working from the very place where your family spends their time gives you more control of your life. It facilitates your ability to be both worker and mother at the same time.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF FINANCIAL HELP

It’s often said that you have to spend money to make money. This rule is most relevant at the initial start-up phase of your business, when investing before return seems extremely costly.

At this point in the process, women are said to be more accepting of external financial help and advice. A recent study shows that female-owned businesses are more likely to be offered a business bank loan than male-owned businesses. For this reason, the business bank loan proves to be the most popular method of funding amongst women, with certain loans offering exclusive support to first-time start-ups.

FOLLOW YOUR INTUITION

Females are renowned for their sensitive intuition and business owners can use this to their advantage when hiring new employees.

While males place emphasis on IQ, female employers tend to taker a greater interest in a candidate’s emotional intelligence, otherwise known as EQ. Emotional intelligence encapsulates the capacity in which an individual is able to control their own emotions and handle interpersonal relationships.

Studies have shown that high EQs are a better predictor of performance than a person’s IQ. As a female employer, following your intuition allows you to be drawn to those who emit a stronger EQ than IQ, leading you to employ the best candidates for the job.

INCREASE YOUR HAPPINESS

Statistically, women perform worse in competitve envrinoments than men, causing them to face disadvantages in a corporate workplace. Working from home, in a familiar environment and at your own pace, will inspire your creativity and, in turn, boost your productivity.

Furthermore, working in an environment where financial reward is closely tied to personal endeavor, is extremely attractive to females. The hard work and success that accumulates throughout the entrepreneurial journey contributes a great deal to a woman’s happiness.

A recent study revealed that females who start their own businesses rank their happiness nearly three times as high  as women who are not entrepreneurs—and that doesn’t even consider the personal and financial reward. The confidence gained from embarking on your own entrepreneurial journey acts as its own personal return on investment.
